 The Institute of Child Health Egmore Chennai garners the pride of being the largest public sector Paediatric Hospital in South East Asia. The creation of the first Paediatric Department at the Government General Hospital Chennai in the year 1948 with late Prof. S.T. Achar a Professor of Medicine turned Paediatrician as the first Professor of Paediatrics Madras Medical College paved the way for the birth of the speciality of Paediatrics in Tamil Nadu. Later due to the untiring combined efforts of Dr. S.T.Achar Dr.V.Balagopal Raju and Dr. M.S. Ramakrishnan a separate hospital for Paediatrics was created at Egmore the renowned ICH HC as the world knows it today. The Department of Pediatrics had a humble beginning to start with less than a few hundreds of children attending the OPD per day with an Assistant Professor a few House physicians and many voluntary postgraduates who got trained to become Paediatricians- a new innovation in Madras. In 1954 a bigger ward was created with 48 main beds and 12 beds in Isolation and Typhoid wards in Government General Hospital to cater to those diseases which were at the helm then.
